Crystal clear cenote surrounded by lush vegetation in Quintana Roo Mexico

Hidden beneath the lush jungle canopy of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula lies a network of natural wonders that have captivated travellers for centuries. Cenotes — natural sinkholes formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock — reveal crystal-clear underground pools fed by ancient subterranean rivers. They were sacred to the Maya, who considered them portals to the underworld, and today they offer some of the most extraordinary swimming, snorkelling, and diving experiences in the world.

What is a Cenote?

A cenote (pronounced "seh-NO-tay") is a natural sinkhole created when limestone bedrock collapses, exposing the groundwater beneath. The Yucatán Peninsula is a massive limestone shelf, and over millions of years, rainwater has dissolved the rock to create an extensive underground river system. Where the ceiling of these underground chambers collapses, a cenote is formed.

Cenotes come in several forms: open cenotes are fully exposed to the sky, often surrounded by lush vegetation. Semi-open cenotes are partially covered by rock overhangs, creating dramatic light effects. And cave cenotes are entirely underground, accessible only through narrow passages — these are the most atmospheric and otherworldly of all.

The water in cenotes is filtered through limestone, making it remarkably clear — visibility can exceed 100 metres in some locations. The temperature stays refreshingly cool year-round, typically between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius.

Where is Quintana Roo?

Quintana Roo is a state on Mexico's Caribbean coast, occupying the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula. It's home to world-famous destinations like Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, as well as the island of Cozumel. But beyond the resorts and beaches, Quintana Roo's interior is dotted with hundreds of cenotes — many of them easily accessible from the major tourist hubs.

The Riviera Maya corridor between Playa del Carmen and Tulum has the highest concentration of cenotes, making it the ideal base for cenote exploration. Most can be reached within a short drive, and many offer facilities like changing rooms, lockers, and guided tours.

Top Cenotes to Explore

Gran Cenote

Located just a few kilometres from Tulum, Gran Cenote is one of the most popular and photogenic cenotes in the region. It features a combination of open-air and cave sections connected by wooden walkways and platforms. The water is impossibly clear, and you can snorkel among stalactites, small turtles, and tropical fish. It's the perfect introduction to cenote swimming — accessible, beautiful, and unforgettable.

Cenote Dos Ojos

Cenote Dos Ojos ("Two Eyes") is named for its twin sinkholes connected by a vast underwater cave system. It's one of the most famous dive sites in the world, with over 80 kilometres of mapped underwater passages. Even if you're not a certified diver, you can snorkel in the main cenotes and marvel at the cathedral-like chambers, dramatic stalactites, and ethereal light beams that pierce the turquoise water. For certified divers, guided cave dives here are a bucket-list experience.

Cenote Ik Kil

Cenote Ik Kil is perhaps the most iconic cenote in Mexico. Located near the ruins of Chichén Itzá, this open cenote is a dramatic circular pool roughly 60 metres in diameter, with vine-draped walls cascading down to the water 26 metres below. A carved staircase spirals down to a swimming platform, and the experience of floating in this ancient natural cathedral is truly awe-inspiring. It's often combined with a visit to Chichén Itzá for a full day of exploration.
