What is a Cenote?
A cenote (pronounced "seh-NO-tay") is a natural sinkhole created when limestone bedrock collapses, exposing the groundwater beneath. The Yucatán Peninsula is a massive limestone shelf, and over millions of years, rainwater has dissolved the rock to create an extensive underground river system. Where the ceiling of these underground chambers collapses, a cenote is formed.
Cenotes come in several forms: open cenotes are fully exposed to the sky, often surrounded by lush vegetation. Semi-open cenotes are partially covered by rock overhangs, creating dramatic light effects. And cave cenotes are entirely underground, accessible only through narrow passages — these are the most atmospheric and otherworldly of all.
The water in cenotes is filtered through limestone, making it remarkably clear — visibility can exceed 100 metres in some locations. The temperature stays refreshingly cool year-round, typically between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius.
Where is Quintana Roo?
